چکیده

We analyze a discrete multi-server model for scheduling customer arrivals under no-shows. The challenge is to assign customers to time slots so that the service system utilizes its resources efficiently and customers experience short waiting times. We provide theoretical and heuristic guidelines for an effective practice of appointment overbooking in order to offset no-shows. Recursive and explicit expressions for the performance measures of interest are derived based on the random evolution of the system’s workload in transient state. We prove discrete convexity properties of the optimization problem that restrict our search to a contained solution space and guarantee that a local search algorithm terminates with a globally optimal schedule. Extensive computational experiments reveal additional properties and patterns that appear in the optimal schedule, and motivate the development of two very well performing and computationally inexpensive heuristic solutions.

On the Partitioning of Servers in Queueing Systems during Rush Hour

This paper is motivated by two phenomena observed in many queueing systems in practice. The first is the partitioning of server capacity among different customers based on their service time requirements. The second is rush hour demand where a large number of customers arrive over a short period of time followed by few or no arrivals for an extended period thereafter. We study a system with mul...

An approximation for multi-server queues with deterministic reneging times

In this paper, we studied multi-server queue with Poisson arrivals, general service time distribution, and deterministic reneging times. This work was motivated by the timeout mechanism used in managing application servers in transaction processing environments. In such systems, a customer who stays in the queue longer than the timeout period is lost. We proposed a scaling approach, and a fast ...

Two-Heterogeneous Server Markovian Queueing Model with Discouraged Arrivals, Reneging and Retention of Reneged Customers

 Customer impatience (reneging) has negative impact on the performance of queueing systems. If we talk from business point of view, firms lose their potential customers due to customer impatience which affects their business as a whole. It is envisaged that if the firms employ certain customer retention strategies then there are chances that a certain fraction of impatient customers can be ret...
